TCS NQT Preparation Guide 2026: Syllabus, Pattern and Tips

The TCS NQT consists of multiple sections tested in a 3-hour window:

Foundational Section (mandatory for all tracks):

• Verbal Ability (24 minutes, 24 questions): Reading comprehension, sentence completion, vocabulary, error identification.
• Reasoning Ability (30 minutes, 30 questions): Series completion, arrangements, blood relations, syllogisms, logical deduction.
• Numerical Ability (35 minutes, 26 questions): Arithmetic, percentages, ratios, work-time, speed-distance, data interpretation.

Advanced Section (determines track eligibility):

• Advanced Quantitative Ability (25 minutes, 15 questions): Higher-difficulty quants for Digital/Prime roles.
• Advanced Reasoning Ability (25 minutes, 20 questions): Higher-difficulty logical reasoning.
• Programming Logic (15 minutes, 10 questions): Pseudo-code, flowcharts, algorithm tracing. No coding required: pure logic.
• Coding (45 minutes, 2 questions): Actual coding in C, C++, Java, or Python. Required for Digital and Prime tracks.

Scoring: Questions are scored differently by difficulty and section. There is no negative marking.

TCS NQT scores determine which track you qualify for:

• TCS Ninja (formerly IT): NQT qualifying score, no coding requirement. Package: ₹3.5 LPA base. Joining as an IT analyst: standard service delivery and maintenance roles.
• TCS Digital: Higher NQT score (typically top 30–40% in each section) + coding section performance. Package: ₹7–9 LPA. Digital transformation projects, newer technology stacks.
• TCS Prime: Highest NQT score + strong coding performance. Package: ₹9–11.5 LPA. Advanced roles in niche technologies, research, or consulting tracks.
• TCS BPS (Business Process Services): Separate track for non-IT roles (BFSI, healthcare operations). Lower package. Different eligibility criteria.

Important: If you qualify for Ninja but not Digital in your NQT attempt, you cannot upgrade within the same hiring cycle. Aim for Digital or Prime from the first attempt.

Verbal Ability (highest differentiation for Indian candidates): Practice 20 RC passages per week. Focus on time management: do not get stuck on one long passage. Prepare 500-word vocabulary list from GRE vocabulary resources (these overlap significantly with TCS Verbal patterns).

Reasoning: IndiaBIX.com is the best free resource for Indian competitive reasoning. Practise arrangement puzzles daily: they appear consistently. Learn shortcut techniques for blood relations and direction problems.

Numerical: Shortcut arithmetic is critical here. Practice percentage calculations without a calculator. Know the ratio equivalents for fractions (e.g., 3/8 = 37.5%). Time-speed-distance questions repeat in predictable patterns: solve 50 past questions to identify the patterns.

Coding (for Digital/Prime aspirants): LeetCode Easy problems are sufficient. The TCS coding section tests basic logic: not competitive DSA. Focus on loops, arrays, string manipulation, and simple sorting. Practice implementing without errors: correctness matters more than speed here.

Mistake 1: Only using TCS mock tests without variety: TCS NQT patterns vary year to year. Practise broadly on IndiaBIX, PrepInsta, and AmbitionBox, not just the TCS iON PrepHub mock.

Mistake 2: Ignoring the Verbal section: Many engineering students assume they can skip verbal preparation. This is a mistake: the Verbal section is one of the highest-differentiation sections for Digital track qualification.

Mistake 3: Not attempting the coding section at all: Many Ninja-track aspirants skip the coding section entirely. Even a partially correct coding solution adds to your overall NQT score and can improve your percentile for Digital consideration.

Mistake 4: Not checking eligibility before applying: TCS NQT requires 60%+ throughout (10th, 12th, UG) with no active backlogs and graduation year within the specified window. Check your eligibility before sitting the exam.
