Campus placements are the single most high-stakes career event for most Indian engineering students: determining starting salaries that compound over years and opening doors to the companies that are hardest to enter off-campus. The competition is real but the preparation is entirely predictable. This guide gives you a month-by-month preparation plan from the beginning of final year to placement day.
Understanding campus placement in India
Campus placement structure varies by college tier:
Tier-1 colleges (IITs, NITs, BITS): Product companies (Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Flipkart, Razorpay) arrive first: typically August–November of final year. They pay ₹20–80+ LPA. Then mid-tier product companies and funded startups. Service IT (TCS, Infosys, Wipro) arrive last.
Tier-2/3 colleges: Service IT companies (TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant, Accenture) are the primary recruiters. Product companies are rare. Focus preparation on service IT tracks while building skills for off-campus opportunities at product companies.
Placement process stages: Eligibility screening (CGPA cutoffs, no active backlogs). Pre-placement talk (company presentation: attend these, they contain specific information about the role). Online Assessment (aptitude + coding). Group Discussion (some companies). Technical interviews (1–3 rounds). HR interview. Offer.
Key dates: Most Indian engineering colleges hold placements July–December of final year (August–October for premier colleges). Pre-placement offers (PPOs) from internships are typically confirmed September–October. If you have a PPO from a good company, you must decide whether to accept it or risk open placements: a decision with no universal right answer.
Month-by-month preparation plan
May–June (3 months before placements start): Aptitude preparation. Purchase a standard aptitude book (RS Aggarwal or Indiabix). Cover: percentages, profit/loss, time-speed-distance, ratio-proportion, probability, data interpretation. Practice 50 aptitude questions daily. Start with IndiaBix online mock tests.

CS fundamentals: OS (process vs thread, deadlock, memory management), DBMS (SQL queries, normalisation, ACID), networking (OSI model, TCP/UDP, HTTP). Prepare a 2-minute project explanation. Mock aptitude tests (AMCAT, CoCubes practice papers).
August–October (product company placement season): Intensify DSA: reach 150+ problems. Start system design basics (if targeting SDE roles). Research each company before their PPT: know their products, engineering blog, recent news. Practice mock technical interviews.
November–December (final placement pushes, off-campus): If placed, help others and continue learning. If not yet placed: service IT companies often do second rounds. Start off-campus applications on LinkedIn and company career pages.
Group discussion preparation
Group discussions (GDs) are used primarily at service IT companies (TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Accenture, Cognizant). Product companies rarely have GDs: they go straight to technical interviews.
GD formats: Topic-based discussion (most common: a current affairs or business topic), case-based discussion (analyse a business problem), and article-based GD (read an article, discuss).
GD evaluation criteria: Communication clarity, relevance of points (quality over quantity), leadership (initiating, summarising, steering off-track discussions), listening (acknowledging others' points), and composure (staying calm when interrupted).
GD strategy:
- Initiate if you have a prepared opening: 'I would like to start by defining our scope for this topic...'
- If not initiating: Let the first 30 seconds of chaos settle, then enter with: 'Building on [name]'s point about X, I think we should also consider Y because...'
- Quality speaks more than volume: 3 substantive contributions with data > 10 repetitive statements.
- Attempt to summarise: 'We have about 2 minutes left: should we summarise our key points?' This is a leadership move.

College TPO relationship: The placement officer has advance information about which companies are coming, their requirements, and CGPA cutoffs. Build this relationship early: attend all pre-placement preparation sessions, participate in mock interviews the college organises, and stay on the TPO's radar as a serious candidate.
Multiple applications: Apply to every company that visits your campus for which you are eligible: even if it is not your dream company. Each interview is practice. An early offer provides security that allows you to interview more confidently for dream companies later.
Resume for campus placements: One-page resume. Include: CGPA (if above 7.5), relevant projects (2–3 with technologies and metrics), internship if any, skills section with technologies, achievements (competitive programming rankings, hackathon wins). No photo, no objective statement, no father's name.
The 'CGPA is low' situation: If your CGPA is below the cutoff for target companies, prioritise: off-campus applications (some companies do not check CGPA), AMCAT/CoCubes for off-campus service IT placements, hackathons (wins can compensate for CGPA at some product companies), and building a strong GitHub portfolio that demonstrates skills regardless of academic records.
