Principal Engineer responsibilities:
1. What is a Principal Engineer? A Principal Engineer operates at the company or multi-organisation scope (vs Staff Engineer who operates at a single-organisation scope). A Principal Engineer at a large company (Google, Amazon) might: set the technical direction for a company-wide platform (the observability platform, the ML training infrastructure, the payment processing stack), represent the company's technical direction to external partners and regulators, drive multi-year technical transformations that require coordinating dozens of teams. Principal Engineers are extremely rare: a company with 5,000 engineers might have 10-15 Principal Engineers.
2. Principal vs Staff Engineer: Scope: Staff = multiple teams or one organisation (product area). Principal = multiple organisations or company-wide platform. Influence: Staff influences teams within their organisation. Principal influences the entire engineering organisation's direction. Visibility: Staff Engineers are known within their organisation. Principal Engineers are known across the company; they often present at company-wide tech talks and are consulted by the CTO. Promotions: extremely competitive; requires sustained company-level impact over 3-5 years at the Staff level. Writing: Principal Engineers' technical documents (RFCs, Architecture Decision Records) must be compelling enough to get buy-in from hundreds of engineers across many teams.
3. What Principal Engineers do that Staff Engineers do not: Define multi-year technical strategy for a company-wide platform (not just a product area). Engage with industry standards bodies, academic research, and open-source communities on behalf of the company. Lead the company through major technical migrations (language migrations, cloud migrations, database migrations that affect every team). Identify the 3-5 technical bets the company should make over the next 3 years and build consensus for those bets.
4. Principal Engineer at Indian companies: The Principal Engineer track is relatively new at Indian product companies. Flipkart created the Distinguished Engineer role around 2021. Swiggy, Razorpay, and PhonePe have a handful of Principal/Distinguished Engineers. At FAANG India: Google India has L7 engineers (Google's Principal equivalent); Amazon India has Distinguished Engineers (Amazon's Principal equivalent); these roles are extremely competitive and mostly filled by internal promotions.
Technical strategy and architecture at the Principal level
Principal Engineer technical work:
1. Technical vision documents: Principal Engineers write 10-30 page technical vision documents that describe the state of a technical domain, its problems, the desired future state, and the 3-5 year roadmap to get there. These documents must: be compelling enough to get buy-in from 50+ engineers across multiple teams, be technically correct (reviewed by other senior engineers), be strategic (identify the right problems, not just any problems), and be actionable (clear enough that teams can use it to prioritise their work).
2. Architecture Review Boards: At large companies, Principal Engineers sit on the Architecture Review Board (ARB) — the committee that approves significant architectural changes before teams can build them. The ARB ensures: architectural consistency across the company (not every team invents its own RPC framework), long-term technical health (new systems do not introduce technical debt that becomes the next team's problem), security and compliance (new systems meet the company's security and data privacy standards).
3. Technical debt at the company level: Principal Engineers identify and drive remediation of company-level technical debt: the monolith that every team depends on but nobody owns, the legacy authentication system that is a security risk, the data platform that cannot scale to the next 10x of growth. This work requires: coalition building across dozens of teams, strong business case for the investment, sequencing the migration to minimise disruption to product teams.
4. Open source and external engagement: Principal Engineers at large companies often contribute to or lead open-source projects that are strategic to the company (Flipkart's open-source Kafka tooling, Razorpay's open-source SDKs, Google's open-source observability tools). They represent the company at technical conferences, write influential technical blog posts, and engage with academic researchers working on problems relevant to the company's technical domain.

Principal Engineer interview preparation:
1. The Principal Engineer interview is a partnership discussion: At this level, the interview is less of a structured technical quiz and more of a peer discussion about technical strategy and judgement. The interviewers are themselves very senior engineers (L7+, VPs) who are evaluating whether you can operate at their level. Preparation: read widely in your domain (research papers, blog posts from senior engineers at top companies), understand the technical landscape of your domain over the past 5 years and the next 5 years, form strong opinions backed by evidence.
2. The 'principal-scope story' requirement: The single most important preparation item: you need at least one story of a technical initiative with company-level impact that you personally drove. The story should describe: the problem (a technical challenge that was blocking multiple organisations), your role (you identified the problem and drove the solution), the approach (the technical choices you made and the alternatives you considered), the alignment process (how you got dozens of teams to agree on a common direction), and the outcome (quantified business and technical impact).
3. Technical breadth for Principal Engineer: Principal Engineers are expected to be technically credible across multiple domains (not just their primary domain). A Principal Engineer on the platform/infrastructure track should be able to discuss: distributed systems trade-offs, database internals, network protocols, security principles, and the economics of cloud infrastructure. A Principal Engineer on the ML track should understand both the ML systems and the underlying infrastructure.
