Paytm (One97 Communications) is one of India's most well-known fintech companies: the first Indian app to reach 100 million users, a pioneer of the QR-code payment revolution, and the first Indian consumer tech company to list on the Indian stock exchanges. Despite well-documented business challenges since its 2021 IPO, Paytm remains a significant employer and an interesting place to work for engineers who want to build at Indian fintech scale. This guide covers the Paytm interview process and what to prepare.
Paytm interview process
The Paytm SDE interview loop:
- Online Assessment: 2–3 DSA problems in 90 minutes. Medium difficulty: arrays, strings, trees, graphs. HackerEarth is the OA platform.
- Technical Round 1: DSA: 1–2 problems with complexity discussion. Emphasis on clean, working code rather than very hard problems.
- Technical Round 2: System Design: Fintech-themed designs. For SDE-1, a lighter discussion of a smaller system. For SDE-2+, full-scale design of a payment system, wallet, or merchant platform component.
- Technical Round 3: CS Fundamentals + Projects: DBMS (SQL queries are common), OS, and a deep dive into your most significant project.
- HR Round: Offer and role details.
Common patterns: Paytm's interview is often described as less intense than Razorpay or PhonePe on the DSA side but thorough on fundamentals. SQL is tested more commonly than at many other Indian product companies: be prepared to write joins, subqueries, and aggregations.
Technical focus at Paytm
SQL questions are consistently reported at Paytm interviews:
'Write a query to find all customers who have made more than 5 transactions in the last 30 days.': Tests GROUP BY, HAVING, date filtering. 'Find the second-highest transaction amount from the payments table.': Tests subqueries or DENSE_RANK window function. 'Find pairs of customers who have transacted with each other.': Tests self-join.
System design at Paytm is fintech-themed:
- Design Paytm's UPI switch: Transaction routing to the user's bank, NPCI integration, idempotency, retry with backoff, reconciliation.
- Design Paytm's merchant dashboard: Aggregate transaction data for merchants, settlement to bank account, download reports, fraud alerts.
- Design Paytm's notification system: 100M+ user base, multi-channel (push, SMS, in-app), personalised campaigns, transactional vs promotional separation.
- Design a digital gold purchase system: Price fetching from exchange, partial gram purchases, storage vault management, sell-back flow.
Tech stack at Paytm: Java (Spring Boot) for core services, Go for newer services, Python for data/ML, React Native for mobile, MySQL and MongoDB for databases, Kafka for event streaming, Kubernetes on AWS.
Working at Paytm: what to know
Paytm went through a significant restructuring after regulatory actions by RBI in 2024 led to the shutdown of Paytm Payments Bank. The company pivoted to focus on payment services (merchant acquiring, UPI, Paytm for Business), financial services distribution, and commerce. This context matters for interviews:
- The team is leaner post-2024: the company went through layoffs and has a smaller but more focused engineering team. Engineers who remain typically work on meaningful, visible problems.
- Mission pivot: Paytm is focused on profitability and sustainable growth after years of loss-making expansion. Engineering decisions are more cost-conscious than in 2019–2022.
- Career trajectory: Paytm is a great second or third job for engineers who want fintech exposure at significant scale. The brand name is still well-recognised in Indian finance.
- Noida base: Most engineering is in Noida (NCR). Paytm has a presence in Bengaluru but the primary engineering hub is NCR. This is relevant for engineers who prefer to work in Bengaluru.

Paytm is a listed company on BSE/NSE (One97 Communications, symbol PAYTM). ESOPs are in publicly traded equity: liquid, but the stock has been volatile and is significantly below its IPO price of ₹2,150 per share. Factor this into your evaluation of the ESOPs.
Compensation at Paytm is generally slightly below market leaders like Razorpay or PhonePe for equivalent levels, but the fintech domain experience and scale of the systems are genuine career assets.
