McKinsey's India offices: in Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Gurugram: recruit from the IIMs, ISB, XLRI, and increasingly from IITs and global graduate schools. The selection process is one of the most rigorous in the Indian job market. This guide breaks down exactly what to expect and how to prepare.
McKinsey India Hiring Overview
McKinsey hires in India across two main tracks.
Consultant (post-MBA): primary hiring from IIM A/B/C, ISB, and select global MBA programmes. The application cycle aligns with MBA campus placement seasons (October–December). Business Analyst (post-undergrad/post-master's): hired from IIT, BITS Pilani, Delhi University, SRCC, and increasingly from engineering backgrounds. BA roles are a 2-year programme before MBA or promoted to Consultant. The interview process is identical for both tracks: Problem Solving Test + two rounds of case + PEI interviews.
The Problem Solving Game (PSG)
McKinsey replaced its traditional Problem Solving Test (PST) with the Problem Solving Game (Imbellus) from 2021 onwards.
The PSG is a 70-minute game-based assessment that tests four cognitive skills: critical thinking, systems thinking, data analysis, and situational awareness: through an ecological simulation game. You do not need to prepare for the content; you need to develop the underlying cognitive approach. How to develop the right thinking: practice logic puzzles, play strategy games that require resource allocation and trade-off thinking (chess variants, StarCraft 2 strategy), and work through McKinsey's own sample PST papers (the older format) to get comfortable with structured analytical thinking.
Case Interview Structure
McKinsey case interviews follow a distinct structure that differs from BCG and Bain.
Lead or interviewer-led: McKinsey cases are typically interviewer-led: the interviewer guides you through the problem, asking specific questions rather than handing you the entire case. This means listening carefully and answering precisely is more important than broad framework deployment. Case structure: (1) Problem statement (1–2 min to structure your approach), (2) Data analysis (interviewer provides data; you interpret), (3) Recommendation (synthesise and commit to a conclusion). Frameworks: profitability, market sizing, M&A due diligence, operational efficiency. McKinsey does NOT want you to deploy a rigid 2x2 matrix: they want tailored structure.

Practice freeThe Personal Experience Interview (PEI)
The PEI is McKinsey's version of a behavioural interview and is taken very seriously: it is not a warm-up.
Three PEI themes: Personal Impact (leadership and influencing others), Entrepreneurial Drive (pursuing ambitious goals despite obstacles), Problem Solving (creating innovative solutions to complex problems). Each theme requires one detailed story. McKinsey interviewers will probe 5–6 levels deep: 'What exactly did you say?', 'How did the other person react?', 'What did you decide and why?' Preparation: write out your three stories in full detail. Then practice telling them to 3 different people who will drill you with follow-up questions. The story must hold up under sustained pressure.
Preparation Timeline and Resources
A structured 8–12 week preparation plan for Indian candidates.
Weeks 1–2: Case in Point (Cosentino): read fully and internalise the frameworks. Do not memorise them: understand the logic behind each. Weeks 3–6: 20–30 practice cases with a partner (find via PrepLounge India community, IIM/ISB alumni networks, or McKinsey-targeting Facebook groups). Track your performance on structure, maths speed, and synthesis quality. Weeks 7–10: focus on your weak area: usually either quantitative analysis or synthesis/recommendation under pressure. Weeks 11–12: mock interviews with a McKinsey consultant or senior case coach if available. Victor Cheng's YouTube channel (free) remains the best video resource for McKinsey case preparation.
