Cognizant hires thousands of freshers every year under its GenC (Generation Cognizant) programme, making it one of the most accessible IT service company entry points for Indian graduates. The process has evolved significantly: the new GenC and GenC Elevate tracks have distinct profiles worth understanding before you begin.
GenC vs GenC Elevate: Two Tracks
Cognizant runs two distinct fresher programmes, and confusing them leads to misaligned preparation.
GenC (standard track): core IT services roles, primarily maintenance and support of existing client systems. Starting salary: ₹4–4.5 LPA. Selection: aptitude test + HR round (no separate coding test for many campuses). GenC Elevate (higher track): digital, cloud, and analytics roles. Starting salary: ₹5–5.5 LPA. Selection: aptitude test + coding test + technical interview + HR round. GenC Pro (for select campuses): the highest-paying track at ₹6.5–8 LPA, targeting premium engineering colleges. Higher coding difficulty and system design basics.
Cognizant Online Assessment
The Cognizant GenC online assessment covers three sections.
Aptitude (16Q, 16min): standard quantitative and logical reasoning: number series, data sufficiency, logical deductions. Verbal (25Q, 25min): reading comprehension, para jumbles, error identification. English grammar basics are sufficient. Coding (2Q, 45min): two coding problems: easy to medium difficulty. Arrays, strings, basic sorting, or simple recursion. The coding section is new (added in 2023 for most tracks): prepare 20–30 easy-level LeetCode problems. No negative marking in aptitude and verbal; approach strategically.
Technical Interview for GenC Elevate
GenC Elevate technical interviews cover CS fundamentals with a focus on your preferred programming language.
OOP: the four pillars with Java/Python examples. Classes and objects, inheritance, polymorphism, encapsulation. DBMS: SQL queries (SELECT with WHERE, GROUP BY, HAVING, JOIN), normalisation (1NF–3NF), primary vs foreign key. Data structures: arrays, linked lists, stacks, queues: definition and use case for each. No complex algorithm problems are expected: the goal is CS fundamentals clarity. Your project: prepare a 3-minute project explanation covering problem statement, tech stack, your specific contribution, and what you would improve.
