HCL Tech Interview Questions for Freshers 2026: Selection Process and Preparation Guide

The HCL Technologies campus recruitment process has four stages. Online Aptitude Test: Quantitative Aptitude (20 questions), Logical Reasoning (20 questions), Verbal Ability (20 questions), and Technical MCQs covering programming basics, OOP, DBMS, and OS (20 questions). CGPA cutoff: 60%. No dedicated coding section for the standard fresher track. Group Discussion at many campuses: 8-12 candidates, 15-20 minutes, technology and business topics. Technical Interview (30-45 minutes): OOP, DBMS, OS, computer networks, project discussion. HR Interview (20-30 minutes). Offer: Rs 3.5-5 LPA.

OOP: 'What is encapsulation?' (private fields with public getters/setters). 'Class vs object?' (class: blueprint; object: instance with allocated memory). 'Abstract class with constructor?' (yes; called via super() when a concrete subclass is instantiated). DBMS: 'ACID properties?' (Atomicity, Consistency, Isolation, Durability). 'Employees without a manager?' (SELECT * FROM employees WHERE manager_id IS NULL). 'Denormalization?' (deliberate redundancy for read performance in data warehouses). OS: 'Thrashing?' (CPU spends more time paging than executing; prevent with working set model). 'Deadlock conditions?' (Mutual Exclusion, Hold and Wait, No Preemption, Circular Wait). Computer Networks (unique to HCL): 'TCP vs UDP?' (TCP: reliable, ordered, slower; UDP: unreliable, unordered, faster). 'OSI 7 layers?' (Physical, Data Link, Network, Transport, Session, Presentation, Application). 'What happens when you type a URL?' (DNS, TCP handshake, HTTP request, response, render).

HCL's GD evaluates communication clarity, response to disagreement, and ability to summarise. Before: prepare opening statements for 5-6 topics (AI and jobs, remote work, EVs in India, social media productivity, India as a tech leader). During: enter within the first 30 seconds; acknowledge counter-arguments before countering ('That is a valid concern, and...'); take the initiative to summarise if the group is disorganised. Speak for no more than 30-40 seconds at a stretch.

HCL differs in three ways: (1) Stronger engineering and manufacturing services (embedded, semiconductor, aerospace) vs TCS/Infosys which are more software-focused. (2) HCLSoftware: owns IBM product portfolio acquired 2019 (Domino, Unica, BigFix, AppScan), giving product company exposure within an IT services firm. (3) Package comparable to Wipro (Rs 3.5-5 LPA). Choose HCL if you want engineering services or product-division exposure.
